(Guthrie Center) The ACGC boys track team sends 14 athletes to the Iowa State Indoor Meet on Friday. The Chargers have deep roster this year and coach Cody Matthewson is looking to turn that depth to their advantage.
Matthewson says they have strength in numbers with 45-50 kids out for track. That’s the most they’ve ever had. Zach Moon and Clayton Wardyn are the only seniors to replace from last year. “We return a lot of key pieces and a lot of guys that are going to be hungry that were so close last year and want a taste of it this year. The mentality we are trying to put into place is getting to state is going to be the expectation and then what can you do with it once you get there. Bring home a medal or bring home a trophy. That’s the mentality that we are trying to evolve. We want to be celebrating that we are running at Drake, but that is not going to be good enough for us.”
Trevin Suhr is back after a 4th place finish in the 800 at state last year. Charlie Crawford is another key cog coming back, just to name a couple. “Our 4X100 team, all of those individuals are back as well as some kids that are going to be vying for a spot because we have about six kids who are very competitive. Our 4X100 we have Brock Littler, Cayden Jensen, Austin Kunkle, Jacob Fox, and Charlie Crawford. Then our 4X800 was a top eight team at state last year and we graduated Zach Moon, but we have Kaden Thompson, Charlie Crawford, and Trevin Suhr back and they are all better than ever right now.”
One of the goals this season is to win the West Central Activities Conference. “Our first priority is competing for a conference championship. I think we have the lineup and depth to do that. Potential is a dangerous word, but what it comes down to is staying healthy, being able to execute, and having that mental approach to do the things you are expected to. If we do those things I think we are going to have a really successful season.”
