(Northwood, IA) — Authorities in northern Iowa are investigating a fire early Wednesday in Northwood that left one person dead and sent two to the hospital. The Worth County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was able to get one resident out of the home before it was engulfed in flames. A second deputy tried unsuccessfully to rescue another person from the burning home. Northwood firefighters got help from Kensett and Mason City to extinguish the fire. Investigators say the resident evacuated from the home and a deputy were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Officials say the second resident died at the scene.
