(Carroll) Kuemper, Catholic, Carroll held off Atlantic to win 55-53 in Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball game at Kuemper on Friday night.
Dennis Vonnahame led the Knights with 16-points, Dawson Gifford, 10, Isaac Evans and Carson Kanne, 7, Michael Kasperbauer, 6, Carter Putney 5, and Nate Overmohle chipped in 2 points.
Ethan Sturm led Atlantic with 16-points, Garrett McLaren and Colton Rasmussen 10 each, Dayton Templeton, 7, Carter Pellett, 4, and 2 points each for Jackson McLaren and Caden Andersen.
The game stayed close from start to finish. Seven points proved to be the most significant difference in-game. The Knights galloped off to a 7-0 run and then struggled to defend the Trojans for the balance of the first quarter. Ethan Sturm and Colton Rasmussen provided the offensive punch to put the Trojans up 13-12 after one. Kuemper held a narrow 24-21 lead at the break.
The game played close the entire second half. Kuemper freshmen point guard Carson Kanne scored five points in the fourth quarter to keep the Trojans at bay. Atlantic did have a chance with seconds left. The Knights committed a shooting foul, but the Trojans’ first attempt misfired, and the Officials negated the second attempted intentional miss because of a lane violation.

Kuemper extends its record to (5-6) and travels to East Sac County today.
