(Avoca) Trey Brix has been hired as the next head baseball coach at AHSTW.
Brix follows Jason Holst who retired from coaching after 24 years with the program. “They contacted me and wanted to see if I was interested in talking further about the position and I’m real excited to get started.”
He’s been away from the dugout the past few years, but was an assistant with the Vikings in the past and was head coach at Walnut prior to that. “I definitely missed it, so I’m just excited to to get back to it. I’ve always loved being around the guys and loved baseball, so it wasn’t a tough decision to take the job.”
One of his top orders of business will be to grow the roster. “I want to get as many kids out as we can. I feel like at AHSTW we have a really big group of good kids that are really good athletes. Maybe some of those guys have given up baseball the last couple of years to focus on other sports during the summer. My #1 goal is to get those kids back out.”
Even though he hasn’t been directly involved in the last few years, he’s still familiar with many players within the program. “I’ve probably coached 3/4 of them in junior high wrestling. I know they come from good families and have good work ethic. The year after I gave up coaching in high school I coached the 13U team that year because they couldn’t find a coach. That would be the sophomores and juniors now. Guys like Nick Denning, Caleb Hatch, Jacob Coon, and Brayden Lund. I’ve actually coached those guys so they are familiar with me and I’m familiar with what they can do and am really excited to coach them on the high school level.”
Brix says another big goal is to get a lot of games on the schedule whether that be freshman, JV, or varsity to give kids a lot of playing opportunities.
