(Council Bluffs) Iowa Western Community College quickly rose to the top of Lane Spieker’s college search. The talented CAM senior will play baseball for the Reivers.
The Junior College route is a stepping stone in Spieker’s long term plan to get to Division 1. Iowa Western stood out over DMACC and Kirkwood. “DMACC was actually the first place I visited. Then I visited Iowa Western and Iowa Western pretty much blew that right out of the water I’m not going to lie to you. After that I went to Kirkwood, but you know Iowa Western was tough to beat. They are close to home and I already know a lot of the guys that are going out there. Just a winning attitude and the way they competed out there is hard to beat. It was a pretty easy decision.”
Spieker reveals his ultimate goal is to get to TCU. A program the caliber of Iowa Western could help make that happen. “They are all about winning and improving players. Whenever you go out there you see trophies everywhere. You see people going to Major League Baseball, you see people going D-1. When I was sitting in coach (Marc) Rardin’s office he told me that the past eight years they’ve sent 120 people D-1 so that’s pretty impressive. He was also talking to me about what my dream school was so we talked about that a little bit and he ended up pulling up the contact on his phone of Kirk Saarloos who is the head coach at TCU. When he has connections like that it really sticks out to you.”
After breaking the Iowa 8-Player single season rushing record this past season the recruiting interest from football coaches picked up. “Don’t get me wrong I love football too, but baseball has always been my passion. If I got the right offer to go play football I definitely would have, but baseball is just what I want to do. That’s the decision I made and I think I’m going to love it.
Spieker says Iowa Western’s proximity to home, competition, talent, and winning mentality were things that all stood out to him and it’s program he wanted to be a part of. He’s projected as a shortstop at the next level.
