(Atlantic) Residents are cleaning up after a powerful storm left a path of destruction in many southwest and west-central Iowa areas.
What appears to be a tornado touched down at the Jeff and Tarah Anderson farmstead southwest of the Atlantic Airport. Jeff and his family were hunkered down in the basement when the storm hit.
The storm traveled north one mile and struck a home at 59071 Highland Road, causing tree, roof, and garage damage. Lori was huddled in the basement when she heard a loud crashing noise.
The storm crossed the highway to the Comes farmstead mangling outbuildings, leveled a 65- foot silo, and sliced another silo in half. Tyler Comes watched it all happen from the east window of his home.
The storm continued northerly, causing damage to powerlines, outbuildings, and blowing out car windows in the parking lot at Mahle Manufacturing on Highway 83 northwest of Atlantic. The powerful storm continued in a northerly direction causing significant damage to outbuildings and powerlines. The downed transmission lines closed Olive Street, toppled semis on Interstate 80, and continued north of Interstate 80.
