(Atlantic) Reconstruction work continues at the Atlantic Middle School damaged by the accidental fire in July. The blaze caused significant damage to the interior of the building and the roof.
Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber says construction crews will wrap up roof repairs by week’s end. The new roof is R-49 and more energy-efficient than the previous one. In addition to that, it has a 25-year no material or labor cost to owner warranty. Additionally, Framers will begin work on drywall for Camblin’s to install spiral ducts.
In other business, the district sent specifications to solicit bids for a 77 passenger bus for 2023 delivery. “This will allow us to use propane buses for events up to 150 miles in diameter from our school,” said Steve Barber.
Barber then transitioned into a brief discussion about The federal vaccine mandate temporarily on hold by the judicial system. Since Iowa has OSHA standards and Atlantic schools have over 100 employees, the district falls under the order. “In a nutshell, that would mean employees would prove vaccination status, and those who are are unvaccinated would be required to test weekly and wear a face covering,” said Barber. “Per the mandate, employers are not required to pay for the tests. We will need to develop a plan if the stay is lifted.”
