(Lewis) Shorter days and cooler fall temperatures remind Iowa drivers of the risk of vehicle-deer collisions increasing in the coming weeks.
In Lewis, Bryan Hayes of the DNR Office says this is the peak of the rut season, as the crop harvest opens up and more drivers are traveling at dawn and dusk.
Deer funnels include; creeks, fence lines, or trees leading up to road crossings. Deer are to follow those for their cover before crossing the short stretch of open road to the other side. Often, if one deer crosses the road, two more are probably nearby.
On a positive note, the chance of hitting a deer remains at the lowest level over the past ten years. Hayes with the DNR Office in Lewis explains, the reduction efforts due to additional antlerless tags on a county-by-county basis significantly reduced the deer population.
