(Anita) CAM’s three sets to one volleyball win over Boyer Valley on Tuesday created a log jam atop the Rolling Valley Conference standings.
It was an extremely competitive match and the Cougars prevailed 24-26, 29-27, 28-26, and 25-19. Coach Jenna Maiers says, “It was pretty big. The girls were so excited. The smiles on their faces at the end was the icing on the cake for me. We’ve been working really hard on getting our mental game really strong and staying focused and not letting a little dip affect the rest of our game and they came out and proved they could do it.”
Maiers comments on what stood out about her team’s play. “Our mental toughness. We’ve talked about it so much this season I think the girls are sick of hearing it from me. We have taught them all year long and the last three years that a lot of them have been with me about all the skills that go along with volleyball. Now we are working on our mental game and making sure we stay focused and not letting a couple of points affect the rest of our game and not letting one person bring the entire team down. We are really working on building each other back up and staying out there as a team.”
As they move forward, they want to work on their blocking game. “I’m going to be a nice coach tonight and let them have a fun practice. We’ll still get some conditioning in, but we are going to do some fun drills and I feel like the girls deserve that. They’ve been working their butts off all season. After that we’ll start focusing on getting our blocking game stronger as we head into the end of our season and into postseason and not necessarily getting a bunch of blocks, but just getting really good touches and getting our defense to play balls off the blocks.”
Tuesday marked Boyer Valley’s first league set back of the year and sets up a three-way tie between CAM, Woodbine, and Boyer Valley. CAM still has Ar-We-Va and Glidden-Ralston remaining on their conference slate. Breanna Bower leads CAM in assists this season with 274. Eva Steffensen has a team high 163 assists. Marissa Spieker’s 215 digs lead the team.
