(Audubon) You may have heard about this game…Audubon and CAM meet in a Week 5 showdown. Both teams are undefeated and ranked in the top five.
KSOM will have coverage on Friday beginning with the In the Huddle show at 5:15. Live video of the game will be available at WesternIowaToday.com. There’s no denying that a lot of eyes and ears will be focused on the matchup between the Wheelers and the Cougars. “We preach to our kids one game at a time, but there’s no secret we’ve openly talked about this matchup in the middle of the season. I’m sure they have.” Audubon coach Sean Birks says, “When preseason rankings came out I’m sure that’s one people had circled as one that would probably dictate the district title. It’s lived up to the hype so far. We’ve both done what we’ve needed to get through. It should be an exciting environment on Friday night. That’s for sure.”
Just three weeks remain in the regular season after Friday night and the winner of this one will have a firm grasp on first place in the 8-Player, District 10 standings. “I think the big part of this one is obviously the district title and home field in the playoffs. Those are big. If they knock us off we’ll likely have to go on the road in the playoffs.” Birks says, “It’s not a guarantee, there are still three more weeks, but the winner is sitting in the driver’s seat.”
Audubon averages 55 points per game and allows 15.5. “The number one thing for me is it’s been a very complete team. Our offense is putting up some numbers. Gavin Smith is putting up numbers, Carter Andreasen, and Matt Beisswenger you can go down the list. Defensively our numbers might be even better. Last week we held a team to 80 total yards.” Birks says, “Defensively the numbers are even better when you take out some of the JV scores later in the game.”
Birks is expecting a tight contest. “This thing is going to be a four quarter battle. It could come down to the last play. It should just be outstanding. We should have the biggest crowd of the year. We are looking forward to it. We are glad we got it at home with our regular routine.”
Getting tested will be a benefit for both teams. Birks admits being eager to find out how resilient his team is and how well conditioned they are to play a four quarter game.
