(Atlantic) Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber says Phase one of the Middle School reconstruction process is complete. The building sustained significant water damage during a roof fire last July, forcing school administrators to re-locate over 330 students to two different locations during the repair process.
Barber says the final Phase is the roof cleanup process determined as the origin of the fire.
Barber says experts are in the final stages of determining the cost to reconstruct the structure’s interior. He says cost estimates for HVAC units and electrical are yet to come, but the good news is there is minimal damage to the concrete deck on the top of the building.
Barber says the goal is to complete the reconstruction process as quickly as possible.
The temporary re-location plan involved approximately 330 students. The 8th grader’s temporary classrooms are in the high school, the 7th graders moved to the eastern third of the Achievement Center, and the 6th-grade students now occupy the western third of the EOC building. The EOC and Link students at the Iowa Western Community College building in Atlantic and the Early Learning Center.
The Central Office is also temporarily located in the Achievement Center.
