(Anita) CAM hosts East Mills Friday night. The Cougars are 3-0 while the Wolverines are 2-1.
These two teams both average over 50 points per game. CAM coach Barry Bower says his defense will need to bring a disciplined approach. “Coach Kevin Schafer does a nice job of exploiting weaknesses. So we have to make sure we stay very, very disciplined on our defense and really cause their offense to be difficult to run. We have to make sure we do the little things better than we did last week.”
CAM has forced 10 turnovers this season with six fumble recoveries and four interceptions. They Cougars are allowing 13.3 points per game, a slight improvement from the 15.8 per game given up last year. “We always felt defensively we were ok. We try to put ourselves in a position not to get beat over the top, a bend but don’t break type of aspect. Now we are trying to put some more pressure on and dictate things. It’s a matter of letting your playmakers make plays and getting after it.”
The offense ranks 4th in the state in rushing yardage. Their passing attack is capable as well. They’ve completed 58% of their throws for 373 yards and six touchdowns. “It all depends on what people are going to do inside the box.” Bower says, “That’s all about making it a simple game. We did a very, very nice job last week finding our passing game…trying to find that balance is going to be crucial for us, because we have kids that can do some damage.”
CAM has a big one looming at Audubon next Friday night, but must focus on the task at hand with a high octane East Mills squad this week. “Every single week is a possible matchup for us that is very, very difficult because of the schedule we have. East Mills is very dangerous. We have a lot of respect for their program. Last year we went down to their place and didn’t play very well.”
In the 52-14 Week 3 win over West Harrison, Lane Spieker completed 9/10 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 23 times for 200 yards and 5 scores. Joe Kauffman had three catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns along with two carries for 39 yards. Colby Rich caught five passes for 60 yards.
Spieker, Kauffman, and Ethan Follmann each had one interception on defense. Kauffman and Austin Williams led the team in tackles with 5.5. They allowed 203 yard and forced five turnovers.
