(Griswold) 0-2 Griswold hits the road for the first time this season. The Tigers travel to 1-1 East Mills on Friday night.
Griswold suffered a 52-0 loss to Bedford last week. They made some plays through the air as Kamron Brownlee completed 9/15 passes for 138 yards and one interception, but the team struggled to establish the running game without Cale Swain in action. They averaged just 3.2 yards per carry on their 21 attempts. Coach Chase Wallace comments on the injuries which have forced his team to play some young guys in key spots. “It’s a bit of a challenge, but guys the guys taken it in stride and accepted the challenge. The injury bug hit us pretty hard in Week 1 so we’ve had to ask those young guys to move around and fill spots and I’m proud of them for how they’ve done.”
Freshman Nick Jennum was a bright spot in Week 2. He had 8.5 tackles along with 96 yards yards on five receptions. Jennum is one of four 9th graders that caught a pass, ran the football, or returned a kick on Friday. “We planned on him playing receiver mostly, but he’s had to step into Cale’s spot and he had a pretty good game last week. He really improved.”
Against East Mills they’ll face a very capable offense. The Wolverines put up 53 points in a win against Woodbine in Week 1 and despite a loss in Week 2 they still found the end zone five times. Senior quarterback Ethan Meier has passed for 483 yards and 9 TD’s in two games along with being the teams leading rusher at 164 yards on 19 attempts with two scores. “They throw the ball well and they have some big size and speed on the outside so we have to be ready for that passing attack.”
Wallace reports the team has stuck together despite a tough start. “It’s easy to stay together when things are going great, but when you are losing it’s great to see everyone sticking together. We won’t quit no matter what the score is and that makes you really proud as a coach.”
