(Oakland) Two of the best teams in Class A, District 7 hook up in Week 3 when Riverside meets Mount Ayr.
The Bulldogs are flying high after a 49-36 triumph at St Albert. Coach Darrell Frain’s squad now turns their attention to a 1-1 Red Raider team that he holds in very high regard. “Coming into the season and looking at returners and things like that I thought Mount Ayr might be the #1 team in our district. When you watch them on tape they look pretty darn tough. It’s a new coach for them who used to coach at Missouri Valley and we faced them a couple of years ago and they beat us up when we went there. They run a little power football and then they have a fast quarterback with Jaixen Frost. It’s going to be hard to contain.”
Frain says they are facing a team that’s bigger than them, but that’s nothing new and they’ll do what they can to create chaos on defense.
Riverside vaulted up three spots in the Radio Iowa poll this week. Their win over St. Albert boosted them to the #5 spot in Class A. “We tried to start fast. We went no huddle right out of the gate and went down and scored quick. We felt pretty good about our offense.”
They outscored the Falcons 30-12 after the first quarter and senior QB Austin Kremkoski became the program’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 37. “He’s grown a lot. As a freshman he did some spot duty for us and then as a sophomore we pretty much put it all on his shoulders. Just his development and understanding what we want has probably been his biggest thing. He’s just a leader out there on the field. He’s always been able to throw the ball really well, but he’s developing better as a player and understanding what is going on out there.”
Kremkoski is one of a couple of senior stars for the Bulldogs. Rhett Bentley a week ago posted 225 rushing yards with three touchdowns and caught three passes for 45 yards and a TD. “We move him around a lot.” Frain says, “We as a lot out of him and right now he’s giving us a lot.”
Riverside is tied for the state lead with 13 touchdowns through two games. The Bulldogs rank #1 in total yardage and 2nd in rushing yardage.
