(Elk Horn) Exira-EHK has won 11 of their first 13 softball games this season. The Spartan’s only losses are to Hawkeye Ten Conference powers Atlantic and Harlan. We’ll have Exira-EHK softball on the air on 96.5 FM Wednesday night at CAM.
Coach Andrea Nulle has been impressed with the way her team has handled everything thrown at them. “Just their flexibility. I’ve played a bunch of different girls in a bunch of different spots. Just their ability to adapt to what I’m asking them to do and step up in different players. That’s been pretty impressive so far and I have a couple of freshmen that are playing well too. I’m just impressed with how everyone is figuring out their role and contributing to the team.”
The Spartans a bona fide ace in the circle with lefty Macy Emgarten. The junior gives Exira-EHK a chance to win on any given night. Entering play on Tuesday she had 98 strikeouts and an ERA under 2.00. “The best part I’ve seen so far is she’s cut down her walks. She’s had one per game. Whenever runners get into scoring position she finds a way to get out of it.”
Emgarten has been one of several bright spots offensively. She’s hitting .474 with a team best 13 RBI. Shay Burmeiser (.442) and Quinn Grubbs (.424) are each above .400 as well. Grubbs has a home run and 12 RBI. Burmeister leads the team in runs with 17 and steals with 8. Alisa Partridge carries a .375 average while Mariah Traever and Gemini Goodwin are each hitting .364.
Coach Nulle knows CAM has a capable lineup. “They are going to put the ball in play. I’m looking at their stats and they put up a lot of runs. It’s going to be key for us to communicate on defense and get people out when we can. Our offense is going to have to put up some runs as well.”
Pregame coverage hits the air at around 5:20 p.m. The game starts at 5:30.
