(Avoca) Audubon jumped in front 4-0 in the top of the first inning and was able to hold off AHSTW Monday evening in high school softball. The Wheelers start the year with a 1-0 record after picking up the 5-3 road win.
Sydney Beymer, Kali Irlmeier, Kylee Hartl, and Addie Hocker all had hits in the opening inning for the Wheelers. When you throw in a walk and an error, the first six hitters of the night all reached safely and the tone was set. Irlmeier and Hocker both delivered RBI’s in the opening frame.
AHSTW starter Ally Meyers found a rhythm as the game wore on. She gave up only two hits over the next four innings. Audubon added a run in the 3rd to push the lead to 5-0. Katelyn Nielsen singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Irlmeier drove in Nielsen.
Meanwhile, Irlmeier was sharp in the circle for Audubon to begin the game. She carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning. Irlmeier struck out five batters on the night and didn’t allow a run until the 5th. AHSTW’s first tally was the result of a leadoff single by Darian Hansen and an RBI hit from Rylie Knop.
The home squad snugged the deficit from 5-1 to 5-3 in the 6th. Three of their five hits for the night came during their 6th inning rally. Kailey Jones singled and scored on a triple by Graycen Partlow. Partlow circled the bases when the throw back into the infield got away. Audubon brought in Alexis Obermeier and the fresh arm paid dividends. She struck out two batters in her 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
The 1-0 Wheelers are back at it on Tuesday against defending conference champ Riverside. 0-1 AHSTW’s 2nd of five games this week comes on Tuesday when they travel to Tri-Center.
