(Storm Lake) The Iowa DNR’s Walleye brood stock collection effort is soon to begin.
Early April is the target time for the DNR’s collection process in Storm Lake and other locations. The collection was delayed last year. “Last year that got put on hold when COVID showed up, but this year we are returning to somewhat normal operations with some safety precautions built in.”
DNR Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes explains whether it be for this project or other anglers it’s a good time of year to access the water. “That’s in the plan to resume that. Ice fishing is done and water bodies are opened up. It’s a good time of year. The water is clear after the ice is off and the aquatic plants are not grown up.”
The DNR’s collection effort each spring stocks the Rathbun Fish Hatchery.
