(Atlantic) This evening, the Atlantic Community Protection Committee will review and recommend time-limits on snow removal, Handicap Parking, and the three-way stop at 2nd and Walnut Street.
Mayor Jones is proposing reducing the hours residents must remove snow from 72 hours to 24 hours. The abutting property owners’ responsibility is to remove snow, ice, and accumulations from sidewalks promptly. If a property owner doesn’t remove the snow or ice within a reasonable time, the City may step in and remove and assess the cost against the property owner for collection in the same manner as a property tax.
Two proposals are on the table in regards to accessible handicap parking spaces on Chestnut Street. The request is for allocating additional accessible handicap parking spaces on Chestnut for one on each street. Currently, there is one on each corner. Along with that, the committee will review a proposal of adding signs signifying the Ramp with an arrow pointing to the ramp, directing individuals to the corner of each street or intersection.
The committee will also discuss a four-way stop at 2nd and Walnut Street after receiving a citizen complaint. Currently, the intersection is a three-way stop. The Atlantic Police Department generated a report on the occurrence of traffic accidents north of 7th Street, between Elm and Cedar Streets between 2016 and 2021 for the committee’s consideration. An additional stop sign would require an amendment to the code of ordinances following the recommendation from the committee.
The Committee meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
