(Council Bluffs) A quick start and sizzling third quarter were more than enough to lift #7 Treynor over #4 AHSTW in a Class 2A District Final. The Cardinals hit a school record 15 3’s in Tuesday’s 84-53 win at Abraham Lincoln High School.
Sid Schaaf was unstoppable in the 2nd half. He scored 34 points in the contest while Tim Zimmerman pitched in eight three’s and posted 28 points. Thomas Schwartz sank one of the triples and added 11 points in the rubber match between these Western Iowa Conference foes.
Treynor scored the game’s first seven points and led by as many as nine in the first quarter. AHSTW settled in and closed within two at one point, but the Vikings trailed 21-17 after one. They wouldn’t be any closer the rest of the night. Treynor scored the first six of the 2nd quarter, AHSTW rattled off six straight of their own, but then a pair of Zimmerman triples pushed the Cardinal advantage back to double figures. Cole Scheffler sank a free-throw late in the first half to put the scored at 33-24 in favor of Treynor at the break.
The Cardinals stomped on the gas immediately out of halftime. Schaaf was red hot and Treynor outscored AHSTW 30-12 in the frame to put the game away with a 63-36 going into the 4th. AHSTW had three players in double figures with 18 from Raydden Grobe, 13 for Brayden Lund, and 10 out of Kyle Sternberg. They ended their season at 20-3. Two of their three losses were to Treynor. The Cardinals advance with a record of 19-4. They’ll oppose 16-6 Van Meter in a substate final at Atlantic on Saturday. The Bulldogs topped Panorama 57-55 on Tuesday night.
