Riverside’s John Schroder earned the first medal of his career by placing 7th in Class 1A at 113. Rated 8th in the state, Schroder began his tourney with a win by fall in 1:15. He went the back side of the bracket after being pinned in the quarterfinal by top ranked and undefeated Braden Graff, of West Sioux. Schroder’s journey on the consolation side would include a 6-4 win over #10 Gavin Reed (Columbus Catholic), 8-3 loss to Edgewood-Colesburg’s #6 Dawson Bergan, and 9-4 win against #8 Andrew Kimball, of Don Bosco. Schroder finishes his season at 37-7. He is a three time state qualifier.
Riverside’s 4th ranked Jace Rose placed 4th at state for the 2nd year in a row. As a sophomore he was 4th at 113 and as a junior he’s 4th at 120. A :30 pin over North Mahaska’s Paul De Jong and a 6-0 decision over North Linn’s 6th ranked Cade Cook put Rose into the semi’s. He was paired against #2 ranked (35-1) Brandon Paez, of Lisbon and lost 6-4 in match that came down to the wire. Rose secured his spot in the 3rd place match with a 9-7 decision over #9 Kellen Smith (West Hancock). His final bout of the tourney was an 8-3 loss to #3 Garrett Funk (Don Bosco). Rose finished the year at 36-3 and has a career mark of 123-13.
Nodaway Valley junior Elliot Cooney secured his first career state medal in three trips to Des Moines. He earned a 7th place finish in Class 1A at 120. Cooney came in ranked 10th by The Predicament and pinned Alburnett’s Blaine Mcgraw in the first round before being topped 13-6 by #3 Garrett Funk, of Don Bosco. In consolation action Cooney ousted North Mahaska’s Paul De Jong fall in 3:01, lost by fall to #9 Kellen Smith (West Hancock), and won TB-1 6-4 over #6 Cade Cook, of North Linn. Cooney is 123-18 in his career including 45-7 this season.
Ethan Follmann, of Atlantic/CAM made his first trip to Des Moines a memorable win. The junior came in rated 10th and walked away with a 5th place medal at 120 pounds in Class 2A. He opened the tourney with a 4-3 loss to #7 Jonathon Burnette, of Spirit Lake Park. Follmann had his back against the wall a couple of times back side matches, but came out on top against Williamsburg’s Kayden Gyp 6-3 and Glenwood’s Matt Beam by fall in 5:38. A consolation semifinal loss by fall to #3 Keaton Ziemet (Central DeWitt) set up a first round rematch with Burnette for 5th place. Despite falling behind early, Follmann reversed the outcome with a 14-6 major decision. His season closes at 33-6.
Atlantic/CAM 126 pounder Joe Weaver entered the state tourney ranked 8th and ended up occupying the 4th place spot on the podium in Class 2A. Wins of 5-1 over #9 Kellen Moore (Forest City) and 2-1 over #6 Ty Koedam (Sergeant Bluff-Luton) moved Weaver into a semifinal with #1 and undefeated Carter Fousek, of Crestwood. Weaver lost 9-3 to the two-time defending champion. On the back side, Weaver earned a 3-1 decision over Moore, of Forest City, in a first round rematch and lost 11-3 against Bondurant-Farrar’s 3rd ranked Chase Fiser in the third place match. Weaver was 42-10 as a senior.
5th at 126 pounds in Class 2A was Harlan’s Luke Musich. The junior was no stranger to close matches and even needed overtime to win his final contest. Musich lost 5-2 to eventual 3rd place finisher Chase Fiser, of Bondurant-Farrar in the first round. His route to the medal stand included a 3:40 pin of #5 Jase Goodell (Humboldt), 3-2 win over #6 Ty Koedam (Sergeant Bluff-Luton), 4-3 win against #7 Blake Engel (West Delaware), 4-2 loss in a rematch with Fiser, and SV-1 4-2 over #9 Kellen Moore, of Forest City. Musich 33-11 for the year.
