(Greenfield) Postseason play got off to a roaring start for the Nodaway Valley girls with a 64-33 win over East Sac County Tuesday night in Greenfield. Maddax DeVault started red hot from the field and never slowed down. She put up 37 points and the Wolverines move on to host South Central Calhoun on Friday.
DeVault’s seven 3-pointers eclipsed her own single game school record of six. She posted 24 points by halftime as the 4th rated team in Class 2A stays undefeated and breaks a single season school record with 21 wins. She and Lexi Shike combined for 36 of Nodaway Valley’s 40 first half points. They led 23-7 after one quarter and 40-17 at the break. “I think we really came out with confidence which is not what we’ve done in the past in postseason games,” said DeVault after her big game. “In warmups I wasn’t really hitting much, but I started shooting and I couldn’t miss and kept going with it.” DeVault went 14/20 from the field and 7/9 beyond the arc.
A 16-4 stretch to start the third quarter put the running clock rule into motion. Brian Eisbach told the media afterwards, “It was a really good showing for our kids after we hadn’t played for over a week. We go hard in practice like everybody else does, but it’s hard to simulate things. Hat’s off to East Sac, they are a good team. There are plenty of things we need to clean up, but by and large we were pretty happy with our kids tonight.”
East Sac County’s year ends at 9-13. They were led by Bree Boeckman’s 13 points. In addition to DeVault’s 37 point outburst, Lexi Shike had a strong performance for Nodaway Valley with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Corinne Bond corralled 10 boards.
