(Anita) 14-4 CAM is scheduled to travel to 11-7 Audubon in a girls basketball matchup that will air on KSOM Thursday night.
Both teams are hot with CAM having won 6 of their 7 games and Audubon notching victories in 5 of their last 6. CAM coach Joe Wollum identifies Audubon’s two main cogs, “Obviously Aleah Hermansen with what she can do and then Jaci Christensen has really improved quite a bit. She’s a dominant force down low. She gets every rebounds and is very, very physical. She’s going to be a huge challenge for us. We have to slow down Aleah on the dribble drive, but if we give her a step she’ll hit the three on us. There going to have some matchup problems for us, but I think our girls are up for the challenge.”
The Cougars used a big 3rd quarter to their advantage in a 59-54 win over Woodbine on Tuesday. Coach Wollum says Naomi Grubbs sparked a 15-1 run. Grubbs is one of several players that’s made huge contributions off the bench this year. “We’ve tweaked the starting lineup several times. We’re getting good production off the bench. Naomi Grubbs the other night, Reese Snyder had a great night the other night was well coming off the bench. Marissa Spieker came in and hit a couple three’s off the bench. So we are getting some different girls stepping up and embracing that role and giving us a spark. Most nights we are at least nine deep and some nights we go as deep as 12 so quite a few girls are seeing the floor.”
The teams have produced some dandies the last two years. CAM won 52-50 two years ago. Audubon returned the favor 53-45 last season. “It’s very competitive year in year out. It’s a nice close game for non-conference and I think it’s a great fit for our schedule. Schools that close we don’t get to play in every sport so it’s nice to get together on the basketball court. Playing a team led by coach Darran Miller is always a fun experience with him on the sideline.”
CAM has seven players averaging at least six points per game led by freshman Eva Steffensen at 11.4. Pregame coverage at 5:45 with a 6:00 tipoff in Audubon.
