(Atlantic) Bob Sweeney liaison for the Atlantic Community School District’s athletic facilities improvement project presented the School Board with a progress report last week.
Sweeney says the weather has allowed some construction work. Construction work at the concession stands at the High School continues during these winter months. The building is enclosed and a portable heater is being used inside. The track curbs at the high school track are in on the south, and east and west straightaways.
Sweeney says concrete has been poured up to the bleacher area, and crews have installed part of the press box, and bleachers at the baseball/softball fields. The Ag Lime-infield surfaces are about 80-percent complete, and 60-percent of the brick chips are poured on the warning track surface at the baseball field.
The $9.5 million projects included; synthetic turf at the Trojan Bowl, new concession stands, ticket booths, restrooms, storage, rubber track, press box, and ADA compliant bleachers. Additionally, the project involved site paving, lighting and sound, and a new scoreboard.
The baseball and softball upgrades include; new dugouts, batting cages, concessions, press boxes, and a hard-surfaced walkway between the two fields.
The new parking area at Washington Elementary and student drop-off areas were also a part of the project.
