(Avoca) The 9-0 AHSTW wrestling team will be in action in a quad tonight along with SW Valley and Underwood at West Central Valley.
Coach Evan McCarthy admits his group has really bought in to more of a team first approach this year. “A cultural issue in our program that we’ve recognized that’s been creeping up the last couple of years. Maybe there was a me before team a little bit. We’ve really been trying to nip that in the bud and emphasize everybody is important to the program and we need everybody involved at all times.”
McCarthy says if you have a bad match you have to be able to move on. “Regain your composure and then realize your teammate is out fighting for the team and needs your support. We’ve been talking about that in weights and talking about that in the wrestling room. It’s been carrying over into our competition. The main reason we’ve been able to do that is a volunteer this year that’s taken on a bigger role. Dillon Hamilton has really helped us out with that cultural aspect. All the work he’s been putting in is really starting to pay off for us.”
The Vikings undefeated dual record will be put to the test tonight. “Obviously we missed some early duals against some extremely tough competition, but we are getting better every time out. Our young guys are making consistent improvement from week to week. Hopefully they can continue that for the next five weeks so when we got to the part matters the most 1-13 or 1-14 however many weights we end up filling are ready to score a bunch of points for us at the end of the season.
In addition to tonight’s duals, AHSTW will have the LeMars tournament on their schedule this week.
