(Anita) The CAM boys basketball season hasn’t gotten off to the start the Cougars were hoping for. The good news is there’s still plenty of time for everything to come together.
At 3-4, it’s a vastly different feeling from where the team stood at this time a year ago when they were 6-0 going into the break. “We’ve struggled some. We have plenty of room for improvement and I think we have the guys to do it. It’s been more mental than physical a lot of the time, but also we are trying to get everybody healthy.”
That’s head coach Nick Hodges whose team team has led a couple of close games slip away. “I really feel like we are pretty close. At the beginning of the year we knew some teams normally play us man-to-man and we focused on that, but we’ve seen a lot of zone and we have to go back through and look at our reads for our zone offense. I was actually pretty happy with the way we started to move the ball in the second half of the Woodbine game. Also at Christmas Break it gives you a chance to re-evaluate as well as put in some things you haven’t had a chance to do.”
Connor McKee leads the team at 16 points per game followed by Colby Rich at 12 per night. Ethan Arp, Lane Spieker, and Cade Ticknor are all between six and nine points per game. “Ethan Arp finally got a little confidence back against Woodbine going for 18. Connor McKee has come along pretty well. Cade Ticknor has been a great surprise. He’s really done a great job for us on the boards and scoring inside. We just have a bunch of athletes that on any given night can light it up.”
CAM returns to action January 5th when they host Exira-EHK. Coach Hodges expects a good matchup featuring two teams with a lot of experience.
