(Avoca) Raydden Grobe scored a career high 37 points on Tuesday night and AHSTW downed WIC blueblood Treynor. The Vikings also got 16 points apiece from Kyle Sternberg and Brayden Lund in their 76-73 win. AHSTW led by double figures throughout much of the game and held off a 24 point surge from Treynor in the 4th quarter.
Coach GG Harris said on the morning following the win, “Waking up still kind of on cloud nine, but we woke up hungry. I woke up hungry, the boys came in this morning and got a good lift in. We are ready to get back after it. We have to take care of our bodies and minds. We want to do that often. We don’t want to just do that once in a while, we want it to be the new normal. The kids have bought in, they are hungry, and we are going to feed off that win.”
Treynor entered the game ranked 2nd in Class 2A by the AP and AHSTW was tied for 6th. Defense was a big key in establishing a lead. “Holding them to 29 points in the first half, we played two really good quarters. It all stems from playing really good defense and rebounding.”
Grobe’s 37 points came within the flow of the game, “It was probably one of his quietest games as far as scoring. Everybody knew he was scoring and doing it at a high level, but it wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t like he was looking to take guys one on one. Guys were finding him when he was open.”
The 6-0 Vikings are tied with Underwood atop the Western Iowa Conference standings. Those two squads are scheduled to meet on January 5th. Next up for AHSTW is a trip to Missouri Valley on Friday.
