(Adair Co.) Two people suffered minor injuries in an accident involving two semis in Adair County this morning.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Ryan DeVault said the accident was reported at approximately 4:17 a.m. near the 80 mile marker of Interstate 80. Unit one was a 2020 Freightliner owned by K&B Transportation out of Sioux City, Nebraska, which was illegally parked along the shoulder of I-80 facing westbound near the rest area entrance. Unit two was a 2013 Freightliner owned by Salia Holdings Incorporated and driven by Raphael Morris from Detroit, Michigan. He was in the right lane of I-80 approaching the illegally parked semi. As Morris approached unit one Morris reported a front steer tire blowout, causing him to lose control. Morris side-swiped the trailer of unit one. After the impact both semis caught fire. Morris’ semi came to rest in the median and unit one stayed on the shoulder where it was illegally parked.
Both drivers were able to get out of their semis and both sustained just minor cuts and abrasions.
Both semis sustained major fire damage and were considered a total loss.
Interstate 80 was shut down for approximately two to three hours and traffic was detoured off of I-80 and diverted around the accident scene.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Adair Fire Department, Casey Fire Department, Adair County Ambulance, Adair/Guthrie County Emergency Management, Adair County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
