(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley has some quality wrestlers eager to take the mat this winter.
Wolverine wrestling coach Jesse McCann gives a look at some of the talented athletes inside his room. “Elliot Cooney is a two-time state qualifier in his junior year. He’s looking to wrestle around 120. I have some other tough kids. Ben Breheny will be wrestling around 126, he’s a district qualifier last year and almost made it to state. I have some tough middle weights. I like Jaxon Christensen, I like Caelen DeVault.”
Elliot Cooney intends to be a state medalist. That’s something he narrowly missed out on last year. “He knows what it takes. We know we are going up weight classes, but that’s fine. He’s gotten stronger, Football has helped him. He’s more muscular and he’s more focused this year. He wants to work hard and do the right things.”
Caelen DeVault will be a welcome addition after missing all of last year with an injury. “He’s doing great things outside of wrestling and he’s just a natural competitor. He’s going to give all that he has. It’s just great to watch as a coach. As a hard worker like that you just know he’s going to get some good wins for us this year.”
Even though practice is already underway, coach McCann is still working to build the roster. Trying to generate more interest a constant process for the program. McCann adds he’s excited to have four girls that will be going to some female tournament throughout the year.
