(Griswold) It’s a new era for Griswold boys basketball.
Jake Speer is at the helm for the Tigers which return a lot of experience from last year. “We are going to try and take that next step this year from being that younger inexperienced team and come back with a little more experience. A lot more juniors and seniors. I think we have nine total upperclassmen so that’s a positive.”
Coach Speer identifies some areas he wants to see his team make some strides in. “I’m really hoping three-point shooting makes a jump. Out of the things we did last year I think that was one of our strengths that I thought we could build on so we put that as point of emphasis this year, making our guards shoot a lot of three’s. And practice habits, these guys are going to hear all the time that we have to develop good practice habits so we can practice like we are going to play.”
Griswold only graduated two seniors from a team that won four games last year, so they’ll return several players that saw a lot of varsity minutes. “Adam Houser is one of our leading scorers from last year and Kamron Brownlee those are guys that I think can score and our bigs too, I think Brayden Stirek is very smart down there.”
The team made the most of what they could do in a limited offseason. “We did a lot of ball handling, shooting, and scrimmaging. It was tough to set up scrimmages with other teams, but that’s something I plan on doing next summer.”
The group looks to strengthen their 2-3 zone defense. “Colton Turner is a guy I really look for on the defensive end. He takes pride in his rebounding and his defense. I’m seeing huge strides from Kamron Brownlee and Landon Pelzer is great defensively as a guard.”
Speer says the conference is up in the air with a lot of losses to graduation, but Sidney is likely a favorite.
