A private family Mass of Christian Burial for 101-year old Gregory Leonard Lappe will be held at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Burial will be at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Gregory Leonard Lappe was born on May 9, 1919, the son of Matt and Helen (Flies) Lappe. He passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic, Iowa at the age of 101 years, 5 months and 13 days.
Gregory was born at home near Carroll, Iowa and attended St. Peter and Paul Grade School in Carroll. On August 30, 1940, he was united in marriage with Gladys Dorothy Stangl. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois. Gregory worked at the Steel Mills in Gary, Indiana and drove taxi in the evenings in Chicago, Illinois. After several months they moved back to Carroll, Iowa. In 1943, they moved to a farm near Guthrie Ceneter, Iowa for two years. In 1945, they relocated to a farm east of Exira, Iowa, where they resided for 66 years.
Gregory was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Adair, Iowa. He enjoyed farming, raising livestock and poultry. He also did custom combining and baling hay in his community, was a salesman for Cargill Seed corn, and a distributor for Nutrilite Food Supplements.
In his past time he enjoyed football, fishing, hunting, and playing checkers and cards. After retiring he took up gardening and sold fresh vegetables at several farmers markets for over 25 years along with his wife, Gladys.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys; one son, Kenneth; one great-granddaughter, Catherine Marie Lappe; five brothers, Hubert, Graydon, Reynold, Clarence and Wilbur Lappe; and three sisters, Catherine Lappe, Hilda Franks and Lucille Scolara.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen K. Riha and Sharon L. Witt and her husband, Dennis; daughter-in-law, Peggy Lappe, all of Atlantic, Iowa; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
