(Mount Ayr) For the 17th time in school history the Nodaway Valley boys will finish their season at the state cross country meet. The Wolverines advanced as one of the top two teams at the state qualifying meet in Mount Ayr on Thursday.
Doug Berg led the way in 5th, Ben Breheny was 9th, and Toby Bower placed 10th. “I thought we did great with all we had to handle,” Coach Darrell Burmeister told KSOM Sports after the meet. “Three in the top ten was big. That was our game plan. We knew SE Warren would have a couple and Earlham would have three.” Gavin Shoemaker in 29th and Jaxon Christensen in 30th rounded out the team scoring.
This is the team’s 7th straight state bid. They’ll be aiming for a spot on the deck. Class 1A #2 rated Earlham was the other qualifier in a boys team race that featured two strong programs. Burmeister says Madrid and Earlham will battle it out for the title next week, but Nodaway Valley is part of a wide open competition for 3rd place in Fort Dodge.
The girls competition came down to two dominant teams as well. Van Meter won the meet and Earlham advanced as the runner-up. Nodaway Valley had just two runners in the field. Hope Kading led the way in 30th for the Wolverines. Abby Engels was 39th.
