(Lake View) An invasive species has been spotted in a West Central Iowa lake.
Black Hawk Lake has had an invasion of Zebra Mussels. Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR “I’m not surprised. A couple of years ago they were discovered in Storm Lake and those are only located about 25 miles apart. Whenever you see an infestation like that you look and see what’s around it because you can almost predict where they might show up next.”
Hayes says they were discovered by a marina operator that was removing docks. “We can’t emphasize enough to boaters and anglers that they need to clean their boats of any plants or debris, drain any water, and dry things off. That clean, drain, and dry is kind of a must to slow down or stop the spread.”
Black Hawk Lake joins Lake Manawa as bodies of water to be invaded by Zebra Mussels in 2020. Water quality will be impacted, but the magnitude of the impact at Black Hawk Lake is yet to be determined.
