(Guthrie Center) ACGC finishes the regular season with a home date against West Central Valley on Friday.
Most of the focus for ACGC this week will be on themselves. The Chargers take a 2-4 record into the contest. Coach Cody Matthewson says, “Focus on ourselves and getting better. Focus on some things that we made mistakes or struggled with last week.”
The 1-5 Wildcats ended a 15 game losing streak earlier this season, but have been outscored 194-13 in district play. Nonetheless coach Matthewson can tell the Wildcats are better than they’ve been in the past. “They have ’em playing hard over there. I love their enthusiasm, I love their excitement. It’s a much different team, much more organized. You can tell that the coaching staff that has come in there is doing a great job with those kids.”
With 20 active players ACGC lost to Panorama last Friday night, 26-0. They were just happy to be able to take the field. “What I take away from it is not to take anything for granted. Enjoy the opportunity to play and not focusing on the outcome.”
Last week’s shorthanded nature allowed some people to excel in new roles, specifically Lucas Marsh and Nolan Wheatley. Both of them moved to the offensive line at late notice and made the most of their chances to help the team.”
Everyone making the playoffs was not necessarily something coach Matthewson was on board with at the beginning of the season, but as it turns out this could give his team a good opportunity to redeem themselves from some of the mistakes they made early on. “It does really help a team like us that’s hopefully getting guys back. There’s games out there that I’d love to have back. I’d love to see Woodward-Granger again.”
Whether the record shows it or not, coach Matthewson believes overall the program is heading in the right direction.
