(Anita) The CAM football team has decided it is in the best interest of their program to have an open date in Week 6.
The Cougars officially found out on Monday that their game with Fremont-Mills was cancelled. Instead of looking around for an opponent to fill the gap, they immediately opted to stay idle. “We just wanted to take this opportunity to rest our kids after a week of playing Lenox. The guys that they had up front were big and physical. It gives us an opportunity to heal and go back to the fundamental stage regarding practice.”
Coach Barry Bower also noted they didn’t want to have the uncertainty of scheduling a different opponent mid-week. “You have to make that decision quickly. You don’t want to leave it in the balance because of preparation details that we go through.”
The open date allows the Cougars to get back to the basics in practice. “A lot of fundamentals. We did a lot of individual work regarding hand placement and hip movement. We didn’t really concentrate specifically regarding schemes.”
CAM’s last outing was a big win. The Cougars defeated Lenox 54-38 in Week 5. “One of the things we did right was we bent, but we didn’t break.” Bower says, “In the 8-man game if you don’t allow the big play you always have an opportunity. One of the things we did was cause five turnovers and we capitalized on those.”
CAM and Fremont-Mills are both unbeaten and ranked in the top ten. Their game was one of two top ten battles in 8-Player to be wiped off the board with Coon Rapids-Bayard and Audubon being the other. CR-B expressed a desire to play CAM, but CAM declined.
