(Atlantic) The Atlantic Community School District will be celebrating Homecoming next week. The Theme is Blast from the Past.
Voting for the King and Queen will take place this Friday. Queen candidates are Grace Barkley, Alyssa Derby, Tessa Grooms, Caroline Pellett, Jenna Pelzer, Haley Rasmussen, Sydney Sanny and Anna Wieser. King Candidates are Craig Alan Becker, Keagen Garcia, Gunner Kirchhoff, Steele McLaren, Colin Mullenix, Grant Sturm, Zane Vance and Joe Weaver.
Craig Alan Becker, Student Council President, said the Coronation/Pep Assembly will be held after the JV Football game on Monday.
“Hopefully that’s also going to be promoting some kids and families to go and watch the JV game and it will also enable people to spread out and still be at a safe distance outdoors,” said Becker.
Another big change this year due to COVID-19 is the parade. The Reverse Parade/Homecoming Cruise will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9th.
“Instead of doing a regular, traditional parade, we’re going to be doing what is called a reverse parade and that is where we’re going to have different people that are normally in the floats or sitting down like the homecoming candidates… they will be the ones sitting along the streets. The people that are watching them will be the ones cruising,” explained Becker. “It’s something that Public Health feels to be a bit better as far as COVID guidelines so it’s what we’re going to use this year so that we can still have something.”
Those who participate in the Reverse Parade are encouraged to decorate their vehicles to demonstrate school spirit. The route will start south on Highway 71 to 14th Street, continue west on 14th Street. Turn north onto Olive Street and turn west onto 10th Street. Turn south on Linn Street and then take Ed Podolak Drive back to Olive Street. At Olive Street, turn south and that concludes the route for the cruise. Traffic rules must still be followed as this is not a parade with closed-off streets/intersections.
Awarding of the Spirit Stick will take place at half-time of the football game on Friday. The dance has been moved to the spring at a date yet to be determined.
