(Des Moines) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds addressed the spiking cases of COVID-19 in Iowa during her press conference on Wednesday morning. While new case counts are declining in some recent hot spots, they’re rising in Iowa.
In Iowa for example; 10.3 percent of cases returned on Monday, came in slightly below the 14-day average of 11.1 percent, according to state numbers.
Governor Reynolds acknowledged Iowa had the highest increase of COVID-19 cases nationally this past week, and the fifth-highest positivity rate in the country. The Governor says this is according to the CDC which tracks numerous matrix each week for all states including the number of new cases and the percent of change from the previous week.
The Governor said in Story County during that same time frame, 783 new cases generated a new positivity rate of 27-percent, 94-percent of those cases were in the 18-40 age group, and 78-percent were in the 19-24-year-old age group. Other universities in Iowa also experienced an increase in new cases.
Governor Reynolds also addressed the recent notification of the counties impacted by the August 10 derecho that have approved for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individual Assistance Program.
