(Anita) The 1-0 CAM football team strides into Week 2 with a lot of confidence.
The Cougars beat Griswold last Friday night 60-8 and have moved up to #7 in the Radio Iowa top ten poll for 8-Player. Their opponent this week is Bedford. Coach Barry Bower has a lot of respect for the Bulldogs, “Coach Nally and Coach Ambrose have continued on their tradition. They are going to be well coached. We have to contain Eli Morris.” Bedford lost to #5 Fremont Mills 53-0 in Week 1.
CAM has a lot of star power back from last year, but many of those players are taking on different roles. “Every single player we have across the board is doing different things than they did a year ago. They are multi-dimensional players. We can fit one into one place and one into another place and it fits perfectly into our system. That’s probably the best thing about our kids is that they are very versatile.”
One of the good things about their Week 1 victory was getting a lot of different players into the varsity action. For instance, Austin Williams led the team in rushing with 64 yards on nine carries while Karter Hilpipre racked up 60 yards and one TD on eight rushing attempts. “We have some kids that have really put in the time and the effort and are going to take this game and move forward with it and be successful. The more field time that these kids get, the better off we are going to be because it adds more depth and comfortability. I’m very, very proud of those guys.”
Colby Rich had a big outing in Week 1 with 3 catches for 93 yards and two TD’s along with four tackles for loss and a sack. Lane Spieker 3/3 passing for 93 yards and two scores. three carries for 58 yards and two TD’s, five tackles, and a punt return touchdown. Cade Ticknor led the defense with 8.5 tackles and Ticknor posted 55 yards rushing on five carries. Joe Kauffman 2 carries for 42 yards and a TD plus 4.5 tackles on defense and an interception.
