Two People Hurt in Head-on Collision

(Boone) Two people suffered injuries in a head-on collision late Saturday night on Highway 17 near the Boone-Hamilton County Line.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the victims as 32-year-old Paulo Benjamin Mendoza-Ponce, of Webster City, Iowa, and 17-year-old Olivia Emalyn Bergman, of Stratford, Iowa. Boone EMS and Stratford EMS transported Mendoza-Ponce and Bergman to the Boone Hospital for treatment of injuries.

According to the report, Mendoza-Ponce, driving a 2017 Ford UT, crossed the centerline and struck a 2020 Jeep driven by Bergman. The Ford came to rest on its top in the west ditch. The Jeep came to rest on its driver’s side in the east ditch.

The accident remains under investigation.
