(Lewis) — Iowa’s youth deer hunting season started on Saturday, September 19.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen, appearing on the KSOM DNR Show, says for many young hunters, this will be their first experience hunting deer.
Lorenzen says each youth hunter must be under the direct supervision of an adult mentor who has a valid license and habitat stamp. Youth tags are valid statewide and can be used for any legal deer.
Another benefit of youth tags is that they can be used in any subsequent deer season, as long as you follow all other rules for that season.
Party hunting with a youth tag is prohibited; the youth holding the tag must harvest the deer.
