Des Moines Man Arrested In Davenport, Accused Of Taking Missing Children Across State Lines
(Davenport, IA) — A Des Moines man is facing four child endangerment charges after authorities say he took four children, who had been reported missing, across state lines. According to the Davenport Police Department, the children, ages 10 to 13, were found with 23-year-old Leo Eckholm. Investigators say Eckholm picked up the children at a local skate park and drove them into Illinois in his convertible, weaving through traffic at high speeds. Court documents say the children nearly fell from the vehicle at one point. Authorities say Eckholm did not know the children or their parents.
Iowa Libertarian Party To Nominate New Candidate For 3rd Congressional District Race On Sunday
(Des Moines, IA) — The Iowa Libertarian Party will nominate a new candidate for the Iowa Third Congressional District race on Sunday. The new nomination will comes after Marco Battaglia’s campaign announced he would be withdrawing from the race Monday, following a medical emergency. Battaglia was removed from the ballot by the State Objections Panel, but had been considering a challenge to the decision. The party says it stands behind Iowa gubernatorial candidate Nicholas Gluba and his choice for lieutenant governor Jules Cutler as the party challenges its removal from the November election ballot in the courts.
Gov. Kim Reynolds Asking For Presidential Disaster Declaration For Central Iowa Severe Weather
(Des Moines, IA) — Governor Kim Reynolds is asking for a Presidential Disaster Declaration for severe weather in Central Iowa in early July. The request would cover Jasper, Polk, Story and Warren Counties, which saw heavy rainfall and flash flooding July 1-4. Damage from the severe weather is estimated at more than six-and-a-half-million dollars. If approved, the declaration would provide FEMA funding to restore damaged utilities, remove debris and provide emergency supplies and shelter for people affected by the storms.
University Of Iowa Research Hope To Use NASA Satellites To Track Nitrates In Iowa Water
(Iowa City, IA) — University of Iowa researchers are using NASA satellites to track nitrates in Iowa waters. The IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering is working with Des Moines Water Works and the Cities of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City to develop the Nitrate Forecasting and Early Warning System. Iowa’s News Now reports the study will use data from 60 water quality stations across Iowa and NASA satellite images to create an AI model that tracks changes in water quality. IIHR says it hopes to help address nitrates and reduce risks to humans and the environment.
