(Des Moines, IA) — Dangerous heat continues across much of Iowa as the National Weather Service keeps an Extreme Heat Warning in effect until 10 p.m. tonight for west-central, southwest, central, and eastern portions of the state.
Forecasters say heat index values could climb to around 110 degrees, creating dangerous conditions that significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun, and check on relatives, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the extreme heat.
Northern Iowa remains under a Heat Advisory, although humidity levels have decreased somewhat across the region.
Relief is expected after the warning expires, with temperatures cooling into the upper 80s and low 90s over the next several days.
