Des Moines Hit By Flash Flooding Overnight
(Des Moines, IA) — Heavy rains led to flash flooding in Des Moines overnight. Polk County Emergency Management says at least four to five inches of rain fell at the Four Mile Creek Basin. The creek is expected to crest at 14 feet, a couple feet below flood levels reached on July 3. Also overnight, multiple people were rescued from vehicles that became stranded during sudden street flooding. Affected roadways and road closures will likely change as rain continues.
Joint Study: Iowa Farmers’ Income Dropped 53% Between 2022-24
(Des Moines, IA) — A new report says Iowa farm income dropped an average of 53-percent between 2022 and 2024. The joint study from Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa State University and Iowa Bankers Association shows Iowa farmers were squeezed by record-high input costs, depressed corn and soybean prices and continued trade uncertainty. The report shows the cattle market as a lone bright spots, with record estimated monthly returns last year. But strong demand and low inventory have driven up replacement costs for ranchers, too.
Central Iowa Water Works Eases Watering Restrictions
(Des Moines, IA) — Central Iowa Water Works is easing watering restrictions across the Des Moines metro. As of Monday afternoon, all customers move from a Stage Three lawn watering ban to a Stage Two water alert. That means residents, businesses and government agencies can resume outdoor watering, but must cut lawn irrigation by about 50 percent. They also need to follow the region’s even-odd watering schedule.
Missouri Insurance Agent Accused Of Bilking Retired Iowa Postal Workers
(Des Moines, IA) — A Missouri insurance agent is accused of swindling retired postal workers from Iowa. The Iowa Insurance Commission has stripped Starrla Norman of her ability to conduct business in the state. The Commission says Norman convinced the former postal workers to liquidate their retirement plans to invest in high-commissioned investments, hiding the replacement status in a way that cost victims tens of thousand of dollars in fees. She’s been ordered to pay nearly 45-thousand dollars in restitution to the victims and cover the cost of the state’s investigation. Norman is also pleading guilty to insurance fraud.
FEMA Approves $6.4 Million In Funding For Disaster Recovery In Two Iowa Communities
(Washington, DC) — Two northwest Iowa communities are getting six-point-four-million dollars to help recover from recent natural disasters. The City of Rock Valley will receive three-million dollars to demolish homes approved for acquisition and badly damaged by flooding. Additionally, the City of Spencer will receive three-point-four-million for the acquisition of 26 residential structures damaged by floods. FEMA approved 16-point-six-million total for disaster recovery in four Midwestern states: Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.
RAGBRAI Day 3 Will Overnight In Boone For 5th Time
(Guthrie Center, IA) — It’s Day three for RAGBRAI (RAG-bry) riders. Riders will leave Guthrie Center on their way to Boone Tuesday. It’s just over 60 miles, pedaling through Panora [[ puh-NORR-uh ]], Yale, Perry, Ogden and, finally, Boone. This is Boone’s fifth time serving as an overnight stop. On Wednesday, riders will head to Marshalltown.
