(Fort Dodge) #10 Atlantic softball team extended their record to 20-3, blanking Clear Creek Amana in the Trojans’ opening game at the Fort Dodge Tournament on Friday afternoon. Cedar Rapids, Kennedy edged the Trojans 1-0 in round 2.
In the first round win over Clear Creek Amana, the Trojans scored eight runs on ten hits, while committing just one error. Atlantic played a solid game all the way around, turning two double-plays, behind the solid pitching of Brynn Lamp. The junior allowed no runs on three hits, while striking out two, and walked four batters.
Atlantic got off to a good start, striking first in the opening inning when London Kirchhoff hit a single that brought in one run. The game became a pitchers’ battle until the top of the sixth inning. The Trojans opened up the game with five runs on two hits. Two runs scored on a fielder’s choice, followed by Lila Wiederstein’s two RBI single. A Clipper error resulted in the fifth run of the frame putting Atlantic on top 6-0. The Trojans added two more insurance runs at the top of the seventh to secure the 8-0 win.
For the Clippers, Elizabeth Timmerman, along with Elizabeth Pasbrig and Addilyn Scheetz, each registered one hit.
Cedar Rapids, Kennedy squeaked by the Trojans in the second round, 1-0 in a pitchers’ duel on Friday evening. Cougar pitcher Lily Knutson blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning and pitched a four-hit shutout, while striking out 11 batters and walking two in six innings of work. Kinsley Johnson pitched a solid game, allowing one run on seven hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.
Makenna Schroeder, Lila Wiederstein, Zoey Kirchhoff, and Alivia Knuth belted hits for Atlantic.
For Cedar Rapids, Kennedy, Peyton Stineman had two doubles, and Lily Knutson launched a solo home run. Adalyn Thorstenson, Emerson Blocker, and Teagan Chrisman also contributed to the cause.
#10 Atlantic faces 4A #9 Winterset in a consolation game at 10:45 on Saturday morning.
