(Underwood, IA) — Underwood took over sole possession of first place in the Western Iowa Conference by beating Treynor on Tuesday night 12-6.
No Garrett Luett, no problem. The Eagles maintained their dominance in the WIC by building a 9-0 lead and never looked back against he Cardinals.
After one run in the first, Underwood sent 11 batters to the plate in the 2nd inning and plated 6 runs. Blake Brensel started it with a double and after Owen Fletcher flew out, the throw to third got away and Brensel’s runner Jaedyn Van Scoyk raced home on the error. Treynor starter Cam Lane had the bases empty but his troubles continued when he hit Gabe Burns; Coltin Johnson singled and Maddox Mechaelsen walked to load the bases. Ryker Adair then ripped a double to left to clean off the bases. After Keaton Hawkins struck out, Gavin Miles drove in Adair with a RBI single; Connor Brummett singled and into Brensel’s at bat, Brummett took off for 2nd, Lane fell for the bluff and Ryan Fletcher running for Miles scored to make it 7-0 Underwood.
The Eagles got two more runs in the third on a 2 run base hit from Miles and it was 9-0.
Treynor came back in the top of the 4th when Underwood starter Brensel could not find the plate — walking four in the inning, two with the bases loaded. Luke Christensen, Brody Larsen and Reece Vorthmann each had RBI singles and the lead was cut to 9-5.
Underwood added 3 more runs in the 5th on a RBI single by Brensel and Burns reach on an error that scored two more to make it 12-5. Treynor added the final run in the 6th but too little, too late.
