(Audubon, IA) — Missouri Valley’s Dilynn Meade broke a 3-3 tie with a two out, 2 RBI double in the top of the 7th inning as the 2A #13 Lady Reds beat 1A #4 Exira EHK Audubon 5-3 on Monday night.
Both teams started strong with runs in the opening frame — leading off the ball game, Meade ripped a hit into the right center field alley and she did not stop. When the throw got away on the infield, Meade keep going around third base for the first run of the game. Emerson Anderson followed with a double to center and when Abigail Bissen reached on a bunt, Anderson scored on another Spartan miscue to make it 2-0 Reds.
Exira EHK Audubon came back quickly — with two outs and Taryn Petersen on 2nd, Zoey Rasmussen bounced one up the middle for a two out RBI base hit. After Abby Wanser walked, Lucy Stanerson blooped in a single to right to score Rasmussen’s runner Brooklyn Snider. Bryli Petersen followed with a RBI single to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.
Both pitchers settled down after the first inning. The Spartans Riley Miller only allowed one hit in the next two innings but in the top of the 4th, she walked Paitlyn West. Kaitlyn Evans singled but West’s runner was thrown out at third base. Ellie Kohl struck out but Carlyn Christensen dumped a single into right for a two out RBI hit of her own to tie the game at 3-3.
The game stayed that way until the top of the 7th — Miller had retired 9 in a row and got two quick outs in the 7th but Rylee Evans — the number 8 hitter — singled and then Lily Handlos hit a ground ball that could have been the end of the inning but the Spartans committed their third error of the night and with two on and two out, Meade ripped one to the alley in right center to clean off the bases and give the Lady Reds a 5-3 lead.
Patilyn West, meanwhile, was dominant for Missouri Valley only allowing two baserunners after the first inning — Brooklyn Brabham got hit by a pitch in the 2nd inning and Taryn Petersen got a single with one out in the 5th. West retired the final 8 hitters including getting two strikeouts to end the game in a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th.
