(Des Moines) Each spring, the National Weather Service (NWS) collaborates with local county emergency managers to conduct spotter training classes throughout Iowa. On, Wednesday, April 15, a session is scheduled in Casey, Iowa, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the Casey Community Building at 502 Antique Country Drive.
Chad Hahn, a Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Des Moines, emphasizes the crucial role that spotters play in ensuring community safety.
According to Hahn, reports from trained spotters on the ground provide valuable insights that boost the National Weather Service’s confidence in storm assessments, helping them understand what is occurring within the storm. The main focus of these training sessions is to educate prospective storm spotters on how to properly communicate with the National Weather Service, including what information to report and how to report it.
The training session is completely free and welcome both new and experienced spotters. There are two other virtual training sessions scheduled for Tuesday, April 14.
