(Iowa City, IA) — The Iowa men’s basketball team suffered a big blow today when Alvaro Folgueiras announced that he will enter the transfer portal.
If he decides to leave, it will be the third team for the 6’10” Junior from Spain who has one season of eligibility remaining. Folgueiras was the Horizon Player of the Year for Robert Morris during the 2024-25 season. After transferring to Iowa and an up and down regular season, Folgueiras hit the game winning shot to upset the defending champion Florida Gators to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. He then followed it up with a huge game to beat Nebraska and move to the Elite Eight. However, he did disappear in the Regional Finals, going scoreless on 0-2 shooting and only played 8 minutes.
For the season, Folgueiras averaged 8.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game and came off the bench in every game but one. He shot 33 percent from three point land, going 36 of 108 from beyond the arc and ranked third in scoring and rebounding this season for the Hawkeyes.
Despite the loss of Folgueiras, Head Coach Ben McCollum has plenty of options with Cam Manyawu, Kael Combs, Cooper Koch, Tate Sage, Isaia Howard, Trevin Jirak and Trey Thompson all in line to return. Plus, Tavion Banks is seeking an extra year of eligibility for his JC season.
