Robert “Bob” Wood, a beloved husband, inspiring teacher, and cherished member of the Fort Dodge community, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Born on October 6, 1956, in Orange, California, Bob’s life was a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of a joyful spirit.
Bob’s family moved to Iowa in 1958 where he spent his formative years, and they made their home in Atlantic in 1971. In 1974, Bob graduated from Atlantic High School. His natural talent for communication and his love for music led him to attend Iowa Central Community College, where he completed the Broadcasting Program, setting the stage for a remarkable career that bridged both media and education.
For many years, Bob was the voice behind the KWMT Driving Home Show, captivating listeners with his witty commentary, inspirational messages, and unmistakable great smile. His affinity for music was boundless, and his deep appreciation for artists and their craft found a home in the Lizard Creek Blues Society, an organization he helped found. Through his “Blues Show” on KTPR, Bob shared his gift of conversation, interviewing musicians from across the country and bringing their stories to life for his audience.
Bob’s dedication extended beyond the airwaves as he devoted years to teaching Broadcasting at Iowa Central Community College, where he inspired countless students with his expertise and passion until health concerns led to his retirement. Through it all, he maintained a spirit of courage and grace, facing challenges with unwavering strength. Bob spent 45 years in a wheelchair, yet never once did he let that define him or dampen his vibrant and uplifting presence. He was an inspiration to many, embodying perseverance and hope.
His hobbies were as varied and rich as his life. Bob found peace and joy in painting and photography, in the quiet moments fishing from his pontoon, and in strumming the guitar-a true testament to his artistic soul. In 2001, Bob joined the Catholic Church, deepening his connection to his faith and community in Fort Dodge.
On September 10, 1977, Bob was united in marriage to Karen Tegels, his loving wife of 48 years. Together, they built a home filled with warmth and kindness in Fort Dodge. Bob’s greatest joy came from family and friends who treasured his witty repartee and heartfelt smile.
He is survived by those who loved him dearly: his devoted wife Karen of Fort Dodge; his mother, Gladys Wood, residing in Atlantic, Iowa; his sisters Linda Wood Shotwell and her husband Charlie of Irving, Texas, and Carol Wood Anderson of Round Rock, TX; as well as his mother-in-law Anita Tegels of Carroll, Iowa. Though deeply mourned, Bob’s memory is carried forward with love and gratitude.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Claude Jacob Wood, whose legacy lives on in Bob’s strength and character, father-in-law Joseph Tegels and brother-in-law Timothy Tegels.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday April 11th at Holy Trinity Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at Holy Trinity Church.
