(Iowa City, IA) — The Iowa Football team is a week into its spring practices but Head Coach Kirk Ferentz is no closer to naming his starting quarterback. Sophomore Jeremy Hecklinski and Junior Hank Brown are splitting the first team reps right now — they are both transfers, Hecklinkski from Wake Forest and Brown from Auburn. Ferentz says he will let the battle play itself out until someone emerges as the number one guy
Iowa lost a lot on the offensive line — Gennings Dunker is a projected 2nd round pick, Logan Jones and Beau Stephens could also go in the later rounds. Key guys coming back include Junior Trevor Lauck at Left Tackle; Junior Leighton Jones could slide over to Guard and Junior Kade Pieper could move over to Center. Ferentz says the whole line is a work in progress
Iowa could use some dynamic play at wide receiver and they brought two guys in via the transfer portal from FCS schools — Tony Diaz from Texas Rio Grande Valley and Evan Jones from Furman and Ferentz likes what he sees
Ferentz also says there have been a few changes on the coaching staff — Jay Norvell is the new Running Backs Coach; Offensive Coordinator Tim Lester has given up the Quarterbacks Coach and Billy VandeMerkt has taken that position; Chris Polizzi is the new Special Teams Coach; Mike Grant is a new Senior Analyst and Brian Smith is a new Defensive Analyst.
