(Des Moines) Iowa residents are bracing for a significant weather event today, as two rounds of severe storms are forecast to impact the state. The storms, which are expected to bring large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated flash flooding risk, will first target western Iowa before progressing across the state.
The first round of storms is expected to develop this morning in western Iowa, with the potential for large hail. These storms will gradually track northeastward, reaching northeastern Iowa by early afternoon. Residents in these areas should remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions and prepare for the possibility of severe weather.
A second round of thunderstorms will develop later in the day over southwestern Iowa. These storms are projected to move east-northeast, impacting central and eastern Iowa throughout the day. The storm system could bring another round of severe weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and the potential for a few tornadoes.
In addition to the severe storms, there is an isolated flash flood risk, particularly over eastern and parts of central Iowa. The highest risk for flash flooding will be in urban areas, where heavy rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems and lead to localized flooding. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
As the day unfolds, the isolated flash flood risk has been extended further northward across eastern Iowa. Those living in the expanded risk zone should be prepared for the possibility of heavy rainfall and rapid flooding.
